Whenever you purchase a home (or move into a rental property), one of the most tedious tasks is utility connection. Have no fear - we have compiled some helpful information here for your reference, and it should help take the stress out of the process.
There are a few things to keep in mind when planning ahead for utility connection, such as:
- Many power/electric companies will require you to visit their offices in person to complete an application. COVID protocols have changed the process even more in some areas, requiring customers to make appointments in advance. So, don't wait until the last minute. Call your service provider ahead of time to find out what is required so you don't end up in a bind on moving day.
- Fees and/or deposits may be associated with the application, especially if you have never been a customer of that company.
- During your contract period (before closing), be sure to ask which service providers are available at the home. Especially in some of our more rural areas, cable television and internet service are not always provided. You may even want to shop around for services where more than one provider is available.
- Propane tanks are often leased rather than owned. This should be clarified in your contract documents, but be sure to pay close attention to leased tanks. If you do not want to keep the seller's same service provider, you'll need to schedule for a new tank to be delivered once you own the home. Even if you are planning to keep the seller's current fuel vendor, you still need to establish your account and decide if you want auto-fill delivery or "call-for-service" delivery. Whatever you choose, remember to plan ahead to cut down on gaps in service, especially If the propane fuels the heating system, cooktop, or other essential system.
